The Inspiration

When infrastructure fails, communication matters more.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, widespread infrastructure disruption highlighted how dependent everyday communication has become on cellular networks and internet connectivity. That sparked a simple question: what could phones do without either?

Build a communication experience without the cloud.

Most messaging products rely on remote infrastructure to send, receive, and store messages. Without a network connection, those experiences can become unavailable.
Chatmergency explores a different approach: use Bluetooth connectivity to enable nearby devices to exchange messages directly, reducing dependence on internet access for local communication.

Rethink the dependencies.

Instead of routing conversations through traditional internet-based services, Chatmergency was designed around local device connectivity. This created a different set of product and engineering constraints, including proximity, device discovery, and real-time availability.

I founded, designed, and developed Chatmergency in three days following Hurricane Helene. The project was a rapid experiment in solving a real-world communication problem using the capabilities already available on mobile devices.
Product Considerations

Designing for constraints changes the solution.

Bluetooth-based communication introduces its own limitations. Range, device availability, operating system behavior, and nearby connectivity all influence the experience.
Building Chatmergency reinforced the importance of designing around actual operating conditions rather than assuming the infrastructure behind a product will always be available.

Chatmergency was a reminder that product development doesn't always begin with a roadmap or a business case. Sometimes it begins by recognizing a problem, understanding the constraints, and building something to explore a solution.

Log Files


Chatmergency follows a standard procedure of using log files. These files log visitors when they visit websites. All hosting companies do this and a part of hosting services' analytics. These are not linked to any information that is personally identifiable.
